Dry Eyes
Common symptoms include scratchy, gritty, or burning sensation. Dry eye is the chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the eye usually leading to decrease wearing time of contact lenses, and an increased risk of eye infections.
Dry eyes has several possibly causes
-using computers and smartphones
-diet high in processed foods and meat
-debris and bacteria on eyelashes and lid margin
-natural aging process (especially among women over age 40)
-side effect of some medications (antihistamines, antidepressants, some blood pressure meds)
-incomplete lid closure (when blinking or sleeping)
-dry, windy environment
*It may seem odd, but sometimes patients with dry eyes will complain of excessive watery eyes; this is because the excessive dryness causes you cry/produce tears. However, these tears are of poor quality and only offer temporarily relief if any.
Treatment for dry eye can include the following depending on your type of dry eye and condition:
-Decrease screen time (try taking 1 hour walk a day- it's free!)
-Artificial tears 3-4x a day (try Refresh Optive Mega3)
-Warm compresses 10min daily (try Aroma Season Heated Warm Compress on Amazon.com)
-Lid hygiene (lid scrubs, massage) (try Zocular Foam Clenaser on Eyedropshop.com)
-Lid margin debridement (try We Love Eyes - In Between Eyelash Brush on Amazon.com)
